    Faceted Navigation

Faceted navigation creates many parameterized URLs and duplicates. Manage it with parameter strategy plus canonical/noindex controls.

    Definition

Faceted navigation is multi-dimensional filtering (color, brand, price) that generates many URL combinations (?color=red&brand=x). Without controls, it creates duplicate content and crawl budget waste.

    Why it matters

    • URL explosion from infinite combinations
    • High duplicate content across parameter pages
    • Wrong URLs can get indexed and outrank canonical pages

    How to implement

    • Define which facets are indexable (only high-value ones)
    • Use noindex or canonical to consolidate low-value parameter pages
    • Avoid blocking everything via robots.txt (bots can’t see directives)
